The Kansas City Chiefs offensive line had a tough game in Week 16 against the Las Vegas Raiders.

The unit was under siege all day and nearly allowed more pressure in a single game than they did in their past two games combined. Patrick Mahomes challenged the offensive line to play better early in the game, but even when their play improved, he was quick to flee the pocket. At times, he even felt himself drifting in the pocket, which made life harder on his offensive line.

“There were times when the pocket was clean, and I was drifting back, and that invites the rush to be even better,” Mahomes said. “I honestly thought that the offensive line stepped up to the challenge as the game went on. Obviously, the first few drives you saw me talking to them, I just challenged those guys to be better, and they were. Then it’s on me, if I’m going to challenge them to be better, I have to be better within the pocket. I was proud of how those guys responded throughout the middle parts of that game and toward the end of it. I have to trust those guys as much as I talk. That’s on me to be better and better as games go on and don’t drift and try to do too much.”

The challenge doesn’t get any easier in Week 17 against the Cincinnati Bengals with defenders like Trey Hendrickson, BJ Hill, and Sam Hubbard in the trenches. Matt Nagy likened the challenge to the one they faced a week ago with Las Vegas, but he believes that his offensive line is up to the challenge on Sunday.

“I have an absolutely amazing amount of belief in this offensive line that we have,” Chiefs OC Matt Nagy said. “These guys are special, they know it. They are fun to coach, they practice hard, they play hard. It’s just last week again all of us – it wasn’t our A-game, obviously. I have a lot of trust and belief in that offensive line moving forward this week, I just do. I don’t think saying, talking about it is going to do – they’re just going to put it on tape and that’s a good thing. I know Pat (Mahomes) feels that same way and we all do.

“I have an amazing amount of support for this entire offense. We’re working through it together. It’s not easy but if this was easy, everyone would be doing it. Winning is easy, this is the part where we have to stick together.”

The Best - Chiefs Travis Kelce became the FASTEST TE to record 900 career receptions

Dave Toub on Tommy Townsend’s fake punt pass:

Chiefs fans have seen Tommy Townsend’s arm come into play before and it came into play once again in Week 16. Townsend has attempted a pass in each of the last four seasons, with three completions totaling 40 yards and three first-down conversions.

“That situation, the time was running out in the half, you know it was getting down and possession-wise we probably weren’t going to get it back again,” Toub explained. “The down and distance, it was 4th-and-five and we practiced that all week, you know in that situation. It’s a fake that we have because Tommy (Townsend) can throw the ball so well. Those guys executed it unbelievably because they kind of knew it was coming. They defended it. You know, the corner dropped back, and they defended the five-yard spot but 84 (Justin Watson) pressed it and made the play work. Then Tommy (Townsend) adjusted, too, so both of those guys deserve a lot of credit for making the play work with the defense that they gave, that they showed us.”

Toub added that they got the perfect look from the Raiders to run the play, but that Townsend had an opportunity to check out of the play if the gunner who was set to receive the pass got doubled.

With Rashee Rice or without Rice, the new-look Kansas City Chiefs will get tested early. With the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals and San Francisco 49ers, they play their last two AFC Championship game and their last Super Bowl opponent by week seven.

We have known who and where the Chiefs' 2024 opponents are since the conclusion of the 2023 season, but on Wednesday we will find out when. Games get leaked the days leading up to the release, so unless the NFL cleans up some of that, we may know the answers to a lot of questions before Wednesday evening. This morning, for instance, the NFL announced the Baltimore Ravens will be the ones kicking off the NFL season at Arrowhead against the Kansas City Chiefs. Before diving in, let’s check out who the Chiefs have on the docket in 2024 in their quest for a three-peat.

Amid the Rashee Rice uncertainty, general manager Brett Veach is bringing in a former second-round pick and seven-year vet to potentially add to the wide receiver room. Former Buffalo Bills, Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Zay Jones is reportedly visiting with Kansas City on Thursday.

As the great Terez Paylor used to say, “The contract year is undefeated.” The Chiefs have no shortage of players entering a contract year, which was always going to be the case when you have a draft like the one they had in 2021.

If the Chiefs needed to suit up tomorrow, they absolutely could and they would be the odds on Super Bowl favorites doing so. Kansas City, however, has a chance to do something no one has ever done before in winning three Super Bowls in a row. General manager Brett Veach also has more cap space to play with than he normally does at this point in the offseason, so just because he has a largely complete roster does not mean he is done adding.

Each Kansas City Chiefs team has had a definite identity throughout the Patrick Mahomes era. In those six seasons, they have made the AFC Championship game every year and hoisted three Lombardi’s, but no team was made equal. In 2024, when the Chiefs attempt to be the first team in NFL History to win three Super Bowls in a row, it truly feels like both their offense and defense could be top-five units.

I do not envy general Brett Veach who has to dwindle the Kansas City Chiefs roster from 90 to 53 this coming September. When you go through the exercise of making a way too early 53-man roster projection, some players with upside or experience will have to be left off of the roster. At running back, however, it is anybody’s guess who those three or four players will be.

The Chiefs have had quite the offseason in extending their own amid a dynasty. After making Patrick Mahomes the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history by re-working his deal last September, the Chiefs have gone on to extend Chris Jones, Andy Reid, Brett Veach and now Travis Kelce.

The Kansas City Chiefs had quite the NFL Draft haul, especially when you consider the consensus NFL Draft big board. Not only did they lock in two potential starters at their two biggest positional needs, but they were able to select nearly all of their rookies below their projected slots.

Speed is officially back in Kansas City after making a trade with the Buffalo Bills to move up from 32 to pick 28 to select Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy. After the big run on wide receivers never really came, the Chiefs moved up to go get their man, taking the fifth wideout in the 2024 NFL Draft.
