The Kansas City Chiefs are putting the Week 1 loss against the Detroit Lions behind them as they prepare to face the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2. They’ve faced this team twice in the past 12 months and know just how challenging they can be, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

“One of our tackles (Jawaan Taylor) was with them, so he knows them a little bit,” Chiefs HC Andy Reid said. “But 41 (Jaguars Josh Allen) he’s a good player, both those defensive ends are phenomenal players. They’re fast. They have high motors, and I wouldn’t slight their backups at all. They can bring it too. The inside guys are talented, they’ll jump in – even if you’re (in) three wides (wide receiver sets), they’ll jump into their base personnel every once in a while and give you the business there. They’ve also – when they’re in nickel, they’ve got good rushers inside, linebackers are fast, secondaries are aggressive, we know that. (They have) Two good corners, they’re a good defense all the way around. But to answer your question, that defensive front is strong. They were one of the top run teams in the NFL last year.”

Patrick Mahomes also knows all too well about their defense. When he faced them during the AFC divisional round last season, Mahomes suffered an ankle injury that would linger throughout the playoffs. He knows that it’s going to be a big challenge for the guys up front and he knows he’ll have to get the ball out quickly.

“Yeah, they’re a talented defensive front,” Mahomes said. “I’ve played them twice and understand that it’s going to be a great challenge for our offensive line. I’ve got a lot of trust in those guys. We’ll just try to keep building as an offense, and I need to get the ball out of my hand. I’ll get it out of my hand, and if we need to take a shot, I’ll trust those guys to make the blocks.”

We’ve got BEEF of the Week:

Chris Jones returns:

Chris Jones is officially back with the Chiefs, ending his holdout after receiving a new contract. While Jones is pleased with the results of his holdout, he does say he would change some things if could go back and do it again. Namely, he wouldn’t skip out on training camp.

“I probably would change some things,” Jones said. “When you have a lot of new guys, it’s kind of tough to be away. Especially in the D-Line room, building that chemistry is important to be successful as a group. But, those are the decisions you have to live with. I’m grateful for how it turned out. I’m grateful to the Hunt Family, (General Manager) Brett Veach, and (Head) Coach (Andy) Reid for working with my team closely to make sure we ensure that we come to terms with something that we can both agree on.”

There are no hard feelings on either side after how things went down, in fact, Chris Jones, Brett Veach, and Andy Reid all have a group text going, where they shared some memes during the course of the holdout.

“We actually have a group text,” Jones explained. “Veach said that I retweeted a picture where it said ‘Chris Jones after season (compared to), Chris Jones offseason’ where I was big with no neck, and we actually had a little joke about that through the midst of it, so I don’t think our relationship was affected any by that, they know how much I love this organization, they know how much I love this team. I don’t think that (the holdout) affected any part of our relationship.”

Grass vs. Turf:

The Aaron Rodgers Achilles injury has sparked some debate in the NFL related to playing surfaces. What is safer, grass surfaces like the one at Arrowhead Stadium or the artificial turf surfaces that are increasingly common across the league?

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes thinks the solution is quite simple.

“I think it’s pretty simple,” Mahomes said. “The numbers say that grass is healthier for the players. I want to play on the best surface that will keep me healthy.”

Chiefs HC Andy Reid was a bit more old-school with his train of thought.

“Listen I’ll probably get in trouble saying something, so I’m just going to say whatever they put out there, we’ll go play on,” Reid said. “We’ll go play in the CVS parking lot.”

With Rashee Rice or without Rice, the new-look Kansas City Chiefs will get tested early. With the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals and San Francisco 49ers, they play their last two AFC Championship game and their last Super Bowl opponent by week seven.

We have known who and where the Chiefs' 2024 opponents are since the conclusion of the 2023 season, but on Wednesday we will find out when. Games get leaked the days leading up to the release, so unless the NFL cleans up some of that, we may know the answers to a lot of questions before Wednesday evening. This morning, for instance, the NFL announced the Baltimore Ravens will be the ones kicking off the NFL season at Arrowhead against the Kansas City Chiefs. Before diving in, let’s check out who the Chiefs have on the docket in 2024 in their quest for a three-peat.

Amid the Rashee Rice uncertainty, general manager Brett Veach is bringing in a former second-round pick and seven-year vet to potentially add to the wide receiver room. Former Buffalo Bills, Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Zay Jones is reportedly visiting with Kansas City on Thursday.

As the great Terez Paylor used to say, “The contract year is undefeated.” The Chiefs have no shortage of players entering a contract year, which was always going to be the case when you have a draft like the one they had in 2021.

If the Chiefs needed to suit up tomorrow, they absolutely could and they would be the odds on Super Bowl favorites doing so. Kansas City, however, has a chance to do something no one has ever done before in winning three Super Bowls in a row. General manager Brett Veach also has more cap space to play with than he normally does at this point in the offseason, so just because he has a largely complete roster does not mean he is done adding.

Each Kansas City Chiefs team has had a definite identity throughout the Patrick Mahomes era. In those six seasons, they have made the AFC Championship game every year and hoisted three Lombardi’s, but no team was made equal. In 2024, when the Chiefs attempt to be the first team in NFL History to win three Super Bowls in a row, it truly feels like both their offense and defense could be top-five units.

I do not envy general Brett Veach who has to dwindle the Kansas City Chiefs roster from 90 to 53 this coming September. When you go through the exercise of making a way too early 53-man roster projection, some players with upside or experience will have to be left off of the roster. At running back, however, it is anybody’s guess who those three or four players will be.

The Chiefs have had quite the offseason in extending their own amid a dynasty. After making Patrick Mahomes the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history by re-working his deal last September, the Chiefs have gone on to extend Chris Jones, Andy Reid, Brett Veach and now Travis Kelce.

The Kansas City Chiefs had quite the NFL Draft haul, especially when you consider the consensus NFL Draft big board. Not only did they lock in two potential starters at their two biggest positional needs, but they were able to select nearly all of their rookies below their projected slots.

Speed is officially back in Kansas City after making a trade with the Buffalo Bills to move up from 32 to pick 28 to select Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy. After the big run on wide receivers never really came, the Chiefs moved up to go get their man, taking the fifth wideout in the 2024 NFL Draft.
