Coach Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes speak about Kadarius Toney return
Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney returned to the field Sunday as the team prepares for Thursday night's game against the Detroit Lions.
Toney missed training camp and the preseason with a torn meniscus he suffered at the beginning of camp.
He enters his second season with the Chiefs after being traded from the New York Giants in 2022.
With the Giants he had 41 receptions and 420 receiving yards in 2021. In 2022, injuries limited his playing time with the Giants that led to a mid-season trade to the Chiefs.
With the Chiefs, Toney had 171 yards receiving, three touchdowns, the longest punt return in Super Bowl history and scored a touchdown that gave the Chiefs a 28-27 lead in Super Bowl LVII.
On Sunday, coach Andy Reid said that Kadarius Toney is good to go for Thursday's game against the Lions.
“Right now he is good to go. He’s moving around pretty good,” Reid said.
With Toney not having any reps throughout the preseason Reid says that they will be able to ease him in with the depth that they have at wide receiver.
“We’ve got enough guys that we rotate anyway, so I think he’ll be alright,” Reid noted.
With Toney available Thursday night, the Chiefs will have six wide receivers for the home opener with Richie James listed as questionable with a knee injury.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes said that it is a positive that Toney is in the starting lineup for the home opener.
“To be able to go out there and have that weapon would definitely be a huge positive,” Mahomes said. “He’s done a great job in the practices that he’s been in so far, and I’m looking forward to him continuing to step up and be even better. Honestly, going out there the first few days and seeing him, he looks like KT (Kadarius Toney).”
