The Versatile tight end won't play in 2023 because of a shoulder injury
The Kansas City Chiefs returned to training Aug. 15 after falling short in their first preseason game in New Orleans and were without one of their tight ends.
The Chiefs have dealt with a number of injuries during training camp this season and found out Tuesday morning that they will be without one of their tight ends for the 2023 season.
The team placed tight end Jody Fortson on the season-ending injured reserved list due to a shoulder injury.
Forston was signed by the Chiefs as an underfed free agent in 2019 from Valdosta State. He spent two years on the Chiefs practice squad and became a fan favorite during training camp.
In his first season starting with the Chiefs in 2021, he missed the second half of the season after suffering a torn achilles tendon in week 6 against the Washington Commanders.
During the 2022 season Fortson caught 9 passes for 108 yards receiving and had two touchdowns. In two seasons he combined for 155 yards receiving and four touchdowns.
Without Fortson the Chiefs tight end room consists of Travis Kelce, Noah Gray, Blake Bell and Matt Bushman.
Fortson will miss his third season with the Chiefs.
Other injuries head coach Andy Reid mentioned during his press conference after practice was safety Mike Edwards (swollen ankle), cornerback Nic Jones (hand fracture), and wide receivers Nikko Remigio with a dislocated shoulder, Ihmir Smith-Marsette (Groin), and Justyn Ross (knee/hamstring injury).
Reid said that the Ross injury doesn’t appear to be serious and should be back with the team soon.
