Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs' goals continue to align in reworked contract

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes renegotiated his contract with the team to secure a pay raise from the 2023-2026 NFL seasons. The team added no new money to the deal but shifted money from later on to the front of his contract. He’ll now earn the most money in a four-year span in NFL history during that four-season timeframe, and he’s probably still underpaid relative to his value.
“I’m in a great spot,” Mahomes told reporters on Wednesday. “I’ve got a lot of great people around me. I’m very thankful to the Hunt family and the Chiefs organization. I’m glad that now, I can just go out there and play football. To get that security, I already had it, but just to get that little bump and to be able to go back out there and just play football, I’m excited for it.”
His goals remain unchanged in the new deal — to find a balance between getting paid and leaving the team in a good position to be able to build around him.
“I think it’s just constant communication between me, my people, the front office, Clark Hunt, and Coach (Andy) Reid to where I can get paid, keep the quarterback market going,” Mahomes explained. “At the same time, keep a lot of good dudes around me and keep salary cap space for other guys to get signed as well. And that’s something I’ll do throughout my entire career to obviously make money for myself and my family, but to keep great players around me as well.”
Mahomes explained that it’s not an easy task to find that balance, but that everyone being on the same page allowed for it to happen. Mahomes trusts that when it comes time to re-do his deal again in 2026, they’ll continue to work together with common goals in mind.

The game is slowing down for CB Trent McDuffie
In his second year with the Chiefs, things are starting to come together for Trent McDuffie. He’s spending the majority of his snaps covering the slot and he’s allowed just five receptions on the year so far. He told reporters on Monday that things are really beginning to slow down.
“A lot actually,” McDuffie said. “I feel like last year was my first time really on the inside playing nickel and stuff, so things that I didn’t see before on the inside were so different and it was such a learning process. This year during OTAs, I was able to kind of break it down to what my position is and my job and responsibilities. The game has slowed down a ton, so it has been very beneficial at that.”
The 2022 first-round draft pick has established himself as one of the best young cornerbacks in the league and he’s only going to continue to get better with more time in his new role.
