Chiefs at Jaguars, Week 2 preview

Can the Chiefs capture their first win? We preview Week 2, with key players, stats, picks and more.

Wes Roesch

We never thought the Chiefs would need a “get-right game” as early as Week 2, but alas, here we are.

The Kansas City Chiefs (0-1) are set to take on AFC South leader Jacksonville Jaguars (1-0) in a rematch of the 2022-23 divisional round. The Chiefs hope to bounce back after their disappointing (and surprising) Week 1 loss to the Detroit Lions, while the Jags hope to keep their momentum alive after beating the Indianapolis Colts to start their season.

Injury reports from Friday

Chiefs

Did not practice: LB Nick Bolton (personal), RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire (illness)

Limited participants: DT Chris Jones (non-injury related), TE Travis Kelce (knee), CB L'Jarius Sneed (knee)

Full participants: WR Richie James (knee), CB Nic Jones (hand), WR Kadarius Toney (knee), DT Tershawn Wharton (knee)

Game designations: RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire (questionable), TE Travis Kelce (questionable)

Jones and Kelce will be back for this game, though it remains to be seen whether it’ll be on a full-time basis. Jones missed last week’s game due to an offseason holdout which bled into the regular season, but the Chiefs got him back after giving him an incentive-filled one-year deal. Kelce is still dealing with a bone bruise in his knee, but it seems unlikely he’ll miss another game, barring a setback.

Lions

Did not practice: S Antonio Johnson (hamstring), CB Gregory Junior (hamstring)

Limited participants: OL Luke Fortner (ankle), DL Tyler Lacy (hip), OL Brandon Scherff (ankle)

Game designations: OL Luke Fortner (questionable), S Antonio Johnson (out), CB Gregory Junior (out), DL Tyler Lacy (questionable), OL Brandon Scherff (questionable)

The Jaguars are missing couple depth pieces in their secondary this week, and their starting offensive line is a tad banged up. Other than that, they come into this game relatively healthy in terms of starters.

Key players and matchups to watch in Week 2

WR Kadarius Toney

All eyes will be on Toney this Sunday after his unsatisfactory performance last week that saw him drop multiple passes in crucial moments. Many placed the blame solely on Toney for last week’s loss. Others, like quarterback Patrick Mahomes and coach Andy Reid, noted that it was a team effort. Regardless, Chiefs fans hope Toney’s Week 1 outing was an outlier, and that he’ll finally show WR1 promise like his potential suggests.

DE Felix Anudike-Uzomah

On a more positive note regarding last week’s loss, rookie Anudike-Uzomah (or “FAU”) had a sneakily impressive showing in his regular season debut. He earned three pressures (two hurries, one QB hit) and made a defensive stop, and was continually in the face of Lions QB Jared Goff. Considering it often takes rookie edge rushers a while to develop in the pros, it’s encouraging that FAU put together such a good game so quickly. It seems like it won’t take him long to earn his first NFL sack.

Chiefs’ run defense vs. RB Travis Etienne

The Chiefs’ defense allowed 118 yards and a touchdown on the ground last week. Defenses typically don’t want to give up those types of numbers, but the 3.5 yards per carry the defense allowed is a significant improvement over the 4.4 YPC allowed overall last season by the Chiefs. It’ll be interesting to see if the Chiefs can keep that number down against Etienne, who rushed for 77 yards and a touchdown last week against Indianapolis.

Chiefs’ tackles vs. EDGE Josh Allen

The Chiefs may want to give chipping assistance to whichever offensive tackle is blocking Allen, who earned three sacks and 10 tackles last week against Indy. Allen mostly lined up on the left side (against the right tackle), but he’ll often switch and play both sides in a game. Chiefs left tackle Donovan Smith and right tackle Jawaan Taylor had a tough time against Lions DE Aidan Hutchinson last week, so it’d be nice to see them bounce back and gift Mahomes a clean pocket in Week 2.

Top stats to know

48.

The top Chiefs receiver, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, had just 48 yards last week. That’s not at all a knock on MVS, who had a good game, but rather a knock on the rest of the squad. The Chiefs rarely have a game without at least one pass-catcher going over 70 yards. Having Kelce back will help, but much more is also needed from the wide receiver unit.

3.

Chiefs DE George Karlaftis had three pressures last week — all hurries — and a pass deflection. He also had a good game alongside FAU and Mike Danna. Between those three, the Chiefs may have themselves a nice pass-rushing trio.

8.

Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie was also a standout last week, earning eight tackles (including three defensive stops) and a forced fumble and having an overall good day in coverage. McDuffie did miss a couple of tackles, but he was all over the place on the field and made his presence known (in a good way) often.

Chiefs-Jaguars matchup history

The Chiefs are 9-6 against the Jaguars all time, dating back to 1997. Kansas City is actually on a seven-game winning streak against the Jags. The last time Jacksonville beat the Chiefs was back in 2009.

The last time the Chiefs and Jaguars played…

The Chiefs defeated Jacksonville 27-20 in the divisional round of the 2022-23 NFL playoffs. Mahomes sustained a gnarly ankle injury after former Jaguars edge rusher Arden Key landed on him the wrong way. Despite the injury, Mahomes came back into the game and managed to lead his team to victory.

The best Chiefs-Jaguars game ever was…

Given the extent of Mahomes’ injury, the playoff stakes and what came after (a Super Bowl win for the Chiefs), the Chiefs-Jaguars divisional-round matchup from last season was probably the best matchup between those two teams.

Chiefs-Jaguars prediction, picks

Jones and Kelce are back. The Chiefs’ defense was actually good last week. And the Chiefs should, ideally, be keyed in after an embarrassing week. The Jags will pose a tough challenge with a strong defense and a myriad of underrated skill position players, but the Chiefs have had the Jags’ number. Reid has coach Doug Pederson’s number, too — Reid is 3-0 against his former offensive coordinator.

Will the Chiefs beat the Jaguars?

The Chiefs should beat the Jags in a close matchup. They did so last year with a banged up Mahomes. I see no reason why the team shouldn’t get back on track, unless the receivers somehow have another poor game.

Will the Chiefs cover the spread?

I wouldn’t bank on it. The Chiefs didn’t cover last week, and are 4-6 against the spread in their last 10. They also failed to cover against the Jags twice last year. I see that trend continuing, with the Chiefs winning by three.

Wes’ pick: Chiefs 27, Jaguars 24

With Rashee Rice or without Rice, the new-look Kansas City Chiefs will get tested early. With the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals and San Francisco 49ers, they play their last two AFC Championship game and their last Super Bowl opponent by week seven.

We have known who and where the Chiefs' 2024 opponents are since the conclusion of the 2023 season, but on Wednesday we will find out when. Games get leaked the days leading up to the release, so unless the NFL cleans up some of that, we may know the answers to a lot of questions before Wednesday evening. This morning, for instance, the NFL announced the Baltimore Ravens will be the ones kicking off the NFL season at Arrowhead against the Kansas City Chiefs. Before diving in, let’s check out who the Chiefs have on the docket in 2024 in their quest for a three-peat.

Amid the Rashee Rice uncertainty, general manager Brett Veach is bringing in a former second-round pick and seven-year vet to potentially add to the wide receiver room. Former Buffalo Bills, Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Zay Jones is reportedly visiting with Kansas City on Thursday.

As the great Terez Paylor used to say, “The contract year is undefeated.” The Chiefs have no shortage of players entering a contract year, which was always going to be the case when you have a draft like the one they had in 2021.

If the Chiefs needed to suit up tomorrow, they absolutely could and they would be the odds on Super Bowl favorites doing so. Kansas City, however, has a chance to do something no one has ever done before in winning three Super Bowls in a row. General manager Brett Veach also has more cap space to play with than he normally does at this point in the offseason, so just because he has a largely complete roster does not mean he is done adding.

Each Kansas City Chiefs team has had a definite identity throughout the Patrick Mahomes era. In those six seasons, they have made the AFC Championship game every year and hoisted three Lombardi’s, but no team was made equal. In 2024, when the Chiefs attempt to be the first team in NFL History to win three Super Bowls in a row, it truly feels like both their offense and defense could be top-five units.

I do not envy general Brett Veach who has to dwindle the Kansas City Chiefs roster from 90 to 53 this coming September. When you go through the exercise of making a way too early 53-man roster projection, some players with upside or experience will have to be left off of the roster. At running back, however, it is anybody’s guess who those three or four players will be.

The Chiefs have had quite the offseason in extending their own amid a dynasty. After making Patrick Mahomes the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history by re-working his deal last September, the Chiefs have gone on to extend Chris Jones, Andy Reid, Brett Veach and now Travis Kelce.
By Tyler Brown 29 Apr, 2024
The Kansas City Chiefs had quite the NFL Draft haul, especially when you consider the consensus NFL Draft big board. Not only did they lock in two potential starters at their two biggest positional needs, but they were able to select nearly all of their rookies below their projected slots.

Speed is officially back in Kansas City after making a trade with the Buffalo Bills to move up from 32 to pick 28 to select Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy. After the big run on wide receivers never really came, the Chiefs moved up to go get their man, taking the fifth wideout in the 2024 NFL Draft.
