The Kansas City Chiefs have slowly been getting the ground game going during the 2023 NFL season.
With each passing week, they’ve built upon their last performance. Against the Lions in Week 1, they mustered a measly 90 rushing yards as a team. In Jacksonville, they managed over 100 yards rushing against a stout defense. Against the Bears in Week 3, they crossed the 150 rushing yards mark for the first time this season.
“Yeah, I think we knew in the building especially that we needed to get the run game going,” Mahomes said of Week 3. “Everybody talks about the offense and how much we’ve thrown over the past, but you always see more at our best when we run the football. So we’re going to try to continue to do that.
In the upcoming game against the Jets on “Sunday Night Football” it will be crucial that they continue their upward trend. New York has allowed 388 rushing yards through three games this season, including back-to-back games with over 130 rushing yards surrendered. The Jets have good defensive personnel, yet, they’ve struggled to stop the run so far this season.
“Obviously, it’ll be a great challenge against this defensive line and linebacking group,” Mahomes said. “We’ll try to continue to establish the run, and when you establish the run, it opens up everything, and so we have a good running back room and a good offensive line, so we want to try to make sure that we keep that progressing in the right direction.”
The Philadelphia Eagles are one of the few teams in the NFL that can automatically get a yard when they need a yard. Their Tush-Push play has yet to be stopped, but it might not be about the play itself so much as it is about the Eagles’ offensive line according to Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes.
“It’s an advantage for them, but you see other teams in the league try to do it and they can’t do it as well as they do,” Mahomes said. “It speaks to their offensive line, it speaks to their quarterback. They know how to do it at a really high level, they practice it and worked on it, so I think as you’ve seen now other teams have tried to kind of manipulate and do that different type of stuff and they might get the first down, but it’s not as pretty and as powerful as when the Eagles do it. All to them, they’ve kind of mastered something that I think other teams are going to try to do as best as they can.”
Will we ever see the Chiefs run this play? Their offensive line is surely capable, but I have my doubts they’d actually ever do it.
